In view of the health context, the period of validity of residence permits held by foreign nationals is exceptionally extended by 6 months. The extension, initially set at 3 months, was extended to 6 months by the order of 22 April modifying that of 25 March 2020 taken in application of article 16 of the emergency law to deal with the Covid-19 epidemic.
This measure concerns the following titles which will have expired between 16 March and 15 June 2020 :
- long-stay visas ;
- residence permits ;
- provisional residence permits ;
- receipts for applications for residence permits.
As the reception of applicants for residence permits in prefectures is suspended until further notice, this extension is automatic. Its purpose is to limit travel while ensuring the presence of legal foreigners. When the prefectures’ counters reopen, applicants will be able to obtain more information on how to regularise applications and renew receipts.
However, it is not advisable for foreign nationals with an expired permit benefiting from this extension to leave French territory, as they may encounter difficulties in re-entering the country, as some countries have announced the closure of their land borders with France.
